Maths

Without mathematicsthere's nothing you can doEverything around you is mathematicsEverything around you is numbers.” Shakuntala Devi.

Maths is an adventure for children (and adults) to immerse themselves in, get creative with, make mistakes, and conquer!

At St Werburgh’s we teach a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum that allows our pupils to become independent thinkers who can confidently use their tools and experiences to advance in their academic pursuits and everyday life.

We believe in the concrete – pictorial – abstract principle, where children need to use resources to ‘do’ and ‘see’ the Maths, before using images, and then being able to work independently. By embedding a mastery approach throughout the whole school from EYFS, teaching and learning is consistent and supports all pupils with their understanding and retention. Pupils are required to explore maths in depth, using mathematical vocabulary to reason and explain their workings.
